What is SAP, and why does it matter?

Super absorbent polymer is the reason a modern product can be worn for hours without the skin sitting in liquid.

SAP stands for super absorbent polymer. It is the material that separates a modern adult diaper from a folded cloth, and it is the reason a good product can be worn for hours without the skin sitting in liquid.

What it actually does

SAP arrives as tiny dry granules mixed into the absorbent core. When liquid reaches them they swell and turn it into a gel, holding many times their own weight. Two things matter about that.

  • It holds liquid under pressure. Cotton or fluff pulp alone gives liquid back when someone sits or lies on it. Gel does not, or at least far less. That is the difference between a dry surface and a wet one at four in the morning.
  • It pulls liquid away from the skin. The liquid moves down into the core instead of spreading across the top layer where it would sit against skin.

Why skin care depends on it

Skin that stays damp softens, loses its barrier and breaks down. Add friction from movement and the ammonia that forms as urine sits, and you get the redness families call a rash. A core with good SAP content keeps the surface drier for longer, which is the single most useful thing a product can do for skin health.

If the surface feels wet soon after use, the product is either at its limit or it was not the right one for that person's volume. Both are worth fixing. Damp skin is the start of most problems in continence care.

The other parts of the core

SAP does not work alone.

  • Fluff pulp spreads liquid across the core so it does not all land in one spot and overwhelm it.
  • The top sheet is the layer against the skin. It should pass liquid through quickly and stay dry itself.
  • The backsheet is the outer layer. In our products it is breathable and cloth like, so air moves and the skin is not sealed in.
  • Leak guards are the raised barriers at the sides that catch what the core has not yet taken in.

A good product balances all of these. Plenty of SAP with a poor top sheet still feels wet. Excellent leak guards on a thin core still leak.

What a wetness indicator has to do with it

Once the core is near its capacity, more liquid has nowhere to go. The wetness indicator on the outside of an Aaegis Secure product fades as it gets wet, so a caregiver can see the state of things without opening anything up. That means fewer unnecessary changes and no guessing.

How to judge a product yourself

  • Does the surface still feel dry to the touch after use?
  • Does it hold its shape, or has the core broken into lumps?
  • Is the skin underneath pink and healthy, not red or shiny?
  • Does it reach the hours the pack claims, with a proper fit?

Those four checks tell you more than any specification sheet. Every product in our range uses an ultra absorbent SAP core for exactly these reasons.

Guidance from our care team rather than medical advice. A doctor or nurse can advise on absorbency for a specific condition.

Here to help

Every product, the same core.

Adult diapers, pull-up pants and underpads all use an ultra absorbent SAP core. The difference is only in how they are worn.
